Portland, OR – Bullseye Gallery presents Landscape Portraits, a solo exhibition of new work from London-based artist Joseph Harrington. Landscape Portraits will be on view July 3 – August 31, 2013.

“My intention is to harness the movement and transience of ice within the fluid yet permanent nature of glass,” says Harrington. Using an innovative technique he calls “lost ice casting,” the artist has created a series of cast glass sculptures that reference time on a geological scale. “The ice is eroded and sculpted with salt,” Harrington continues, “and is then cast into glass, capturing a moment in time.” For Landscape Portraits Harrington drew inspiration from the rural countryside of his home and the diverse landscapes, such as the Oregon coastline, that he recently visited. “I focus on the rugged coastlines,” Harrington explains, “looking at erosion as a fascinating spectacle of discovery and generator of form.”

After graduating with honors from the Buckinghampsire New University, Harrington spent two years as assistant to the glass artists Sally Fawkes and Colin Reid in Stroud, Gloucestershire. In 2006, Harrington received his MA from the Royal College of Art in London, where he developed a unique casting technique using ice, a process that allows him to permanently capture in glass the transient nature of ice. Harrington was a finalist for the 2006 Bombay Sapphire Prize, a shortlisted finalist at the 2006 International Festival of Glass curated by Dan Klein, and a finalist in Emerge 2010.
