Betweeness
Kilnformed Glass and Steel Screens Created by Portland Architects and Designers
June 5 - July 19,  2003

VIEW EXHIBITION ARTWORK
A collaboration between design and industry, the Screen Project was co-sponsored by Bullseye Glass Co. and Columbia Wire and Iron Works, with generous assistance from a long list of local studios, suppliers and fabricators. The theme of "betweenness" was selected by architecture critic and show curator Randy Gragg.

A color exhibition catalogue is available for purchase from the gallery.

Screen sales benefit the Architectural Foundation of Oregon.

Our project addresses the issue of betweenness by engaging spatial and material boundaries. As the viewer moves around the screen, from oblique to perpendicular, from close to far, the boundaries of the screen are pushed. Meaning is found between heaviness and lightness, solid and void, material and immaterial.

My design attempts to give physical form to that moment of anticipation between one experience and another. It is that which separates one experience, in this case spatial and temporal, that invites a response. We hoped that our use of translucent glass and an open frame structure would encourage this type of anticipation between first and second experiences.

My experience with working with Betweenness has heightened my awareness of the placement of planes and objects. I would like to develop this concept further as a freestanding piece, as well as a fixed object.

The condition that is alluring to us about “Betweenness” is neither here nor there, a condition that is neither present nor absent but a mutable state. It is not so much that we intend to concretize the ambiguous or the abstract but to go beyond the old paradigms of program specific use and recognize the multi-dimensional nature of space and to address more rich and dynamic possibilities of spatial definition.

We used glass to explore the organic thinness that lies between defining solids of space. To create layers of betweenness we used multiple piles of glass laminated together to create a three-dimensional, multi-directional composition within a very thin pane. Glass offers multiple experiences, from invisible to sandblasted obscurity, from planar to sinuously slumped, from clear to glowing rich color. For these reasons we use glass as much as possible as a building material and design element.

Kekkai
Sold

Japanese spatial awareness was my inspiration for creating this screen. The original Buddhist concept of "kekkai" was said to exist at the divide between the sacred and the profane. With glass as the medium, the screen is physically ambiguous and allows for a dialogue to occur between these two sides.

Betweenness is a transitional zone — neither, shared and ambiguous, multi-layered. My design was based on my attraction to the exceptionally brilliant yet transparent color characteristics of the Bullseye glass. My screen seeks to capture and intensify the above characteristics I found so interesting. The steel in this work plays off the glass panels as a bold but silent partner in juxtaposition to the glass’s sensual presence.

Betweenness is a spatial and sensory condition between two or more separates, which can control the flow of information, be it tactile, visual, or aural. Our concept merges the typology of a screen as an architectural device of betweenness (both functional and ritual) with the innate optical, physical qualities, and limits of flat glass technology. The mechanics and assembly of the screen installation utilizes a cable system, in tension, which could allow for the screen to be installed and function as wall, floor, or ceiling.
